More information

Coming to train with us?  Here is some useful information for your stay.

Denman Island is a very unique and special place to stay and visit.  Roots Dojo is centrally located at: 5291 Denman Road.

Getting here and around:
Find your way to Vancouver Island by way of ferry from the Lower Mainland via Tsawassen or Horseshoe Bay or from the Sunshine coast via Powell River. You can also fly to Vancouver Island, and Comox airport is your closest destination airport.

The Tofino Bus and the Island Link bus companies pass Buckley Bay and leave somewhat in coordination with arriving ferries from the Mainland.

The ferry to Denman Island leaves from Buckley Bay (which is one hour north of Nanaimo, 2.5 hours from Victoria, and 30 minutes from Courtenay, and 40 minutes from Comox).  The Buckley Bay-Denman Island ferry runs almost hourly, but please note that it doesn’t sail very late and that summer months can get pretty busy.  Click here for the Current Ferry Schedule to Denman Island.

If you are not driving, it is pretty east to get around Denman Island by walking or hitch hiking.

There are a few options for accommodations while you are here.

  1. There is camping at Fillongley Park.  This is a nice campground on the beach about a 5 minute drive from the Dojo.  It is $23/night.   There are only 10 sites, which tend to fill up.  You can make reservations here: If the sites are all full, they usually let people put their tent up further down the beach, but you wouldn’t be able to drive to your site. Note that there is a fire ban that likely runs until the end of September.
  2. The Guesthouse is a hostel on the Island.  They have rooms starting at $25/night.  There is a cafe/restaurant there as well.  Also only a few minutes drive from the Dojo.
  3. Airbnb offers a range of options for a stay.
  4. Please inquire about staying at the Dojo.  It is a very rustic setting, no fires, smoking, or pets.  Bring your own water.

There is a General Store that sells groceries and a couple of cafes for food.  It’s always a good idea to stock up before you get here if you need something in particular.  Once on the Island, your options are limited.

Training at Roots:

Depending on your course and length of stay, we might be training both inside and outside. Your footwear will take a beating- guaranteed. Stay away from big boots, but you may choose to have indoor and outdoor training shoes.  From time to time you will get muddy, wet and dirty. We suggest wearing comfortable layers of clothing you don’t mind damaging.

Items that you may want to have for your day to day benefit (not training requirement)  include, a notebook, flashlight/headlamp, rubber boots and rain gear.

Our students are often embedded at different levels in the Denman community.  Any other questions about getting to and from Denman, or your stay here please get in touch.
